Functional Training for all sports is essential to making the athlete better. Functional Training focuses on injury reduction through the use of progressively more demanding exercises and drills. Functional Training is the logical future within the field of performance enhancement and athletic development. Strength is developed with the intent of improving sports skills. Functional Training is more accurately represented as Sports General Training. Sports General Training or Functional Training attempt to focus on multi-joint movement. Multi-joint movement integrate multiple muscles groups into different movement patterns, thus creating a more agile athlete. Each athlete is different, and will present a unique challenge. Therefore, as a trainer you will need to adjust without compromising your core beliefs. Athletic development training is both an art and science. Training should be rooted in science, but the trainer has to have good experimental base to help athletes achieve their full potential.
